How Much Exercise Does Your Dog Actually Need?

Somewhere around the third lap of the block, a lot of owners start to wonder whether they have done enough, or too much, or the wrong kind entirely. The dog in question might be flopped by the door looking thoroughly done in, or bouncing off the walls an hour after a supposedly tiring walk, and either way the question is the same: how much exercise does a dog actually need?

The honest answer is that there is no single number. A figure like “thirty minutes a day” gets repeated so often it has become received wisdom, but it was never built to account for a seven-week-old Labrador puppy, a ten-year-old Staffordshire terrier with early arthritis, or a two-year-old Border Collie who was bred, quite deliberately, to work outdoors all day. Exercise needs are not really about the clock. They are about what a particular dog's body, at its particular age and in its particular condition, can absorb without cost.

That distinction, between time spent moving and load the body can tolerate, is where osteopathic thinking has something useful to add to a conversation usually dominated by breed charts and generic walk-length rules.

Why “It Depends” Is Actually the Answer

Breed shapes exercise tolerance more than almost anything else, but not always in the direction people expect. A working line Border Collie or a Vizsla was bred for sustained physical output and can genuinely struggle, behaviourally and physically, on too little activity. A brachycephalic breed like a Bulldog or Pug carries a very different set of constraints, airway structure that limits heat dissipation and effort tolerance long before muscular fatigue becomes the issue, so a short, cool walk may represent their genuine ceiling rather than an owner being overly cautious.

Size complicates the picture further, and not in a straight line. A giant breed dog carries more mass over a still-developing skeleton and needs its activity managed accordingly well into adulthood, while some sighthounds built for short bursts of speed are content with far less overall volume than their size would suggest. Individual temperament sits on top of all of this. Two dogs of the same breed, age, and size can have meaningfully different appetites for activity, and treating a laid-back dog and a driven one identically usually satisfies neither.

Puppies: Why More Isn't Better

It is tempting, watching a puppy's apparently bottomless energy, to assume that more running and playing can only be a good thing. The skeleton tells a different story. A puppy's long bones lengthen at growth plates, areas of cartilage at each end of the bone that have not yet ossified into solid bone, and these plates remain genuinely vulnerable to injury from repetitive, high-impact, or jarring activity until they close, an age that varies from around six months in small breeds to well over a year in giant ones.

This does not mean puppies should be kept still. A Norwegian study following more than five hundred large-breed puppies found that dogs who had access to regular off-leash outdoor exercise in their first three months actually had a lower risk of developing hip dysplasia later in life, while those who used stairs frequently during the same window had a higher risk (Krontveit et al., 2012). The pattern that emerged was not “less is safer” but “the type of load matters more than the amount.” Repetitive, high-impact activities such as jumping down from height, forced running alongside a bike, or ball-chasing at speed on hard ground put concentrated strain through joints and growth plates that are simply not ready for it. Varied, self-paced movement on soft, uneven ground does the opposite, building the proprioception and joint stability a puppy will rely on for the rest of its life.

Adult Dogs: Working Backward From Behaviour, Not the Clock

For a fully grown, healthy dog, the useful exercise is more about matching output to the individual dog's evident need than hitting a target duration. A dog that is genuinely under-exercised tends to tell you so. Restlessness in the evening, destructive chewing, difficulty settling, and excessive barking are common behavioural markers of unmet activity needs, and they usually resolve, at least partly, once the right amount and type of movement is introduced.

Over-exercise leaves different, sometimes subtler signs. A dog that is limping the day after a long hike, reluctant to jump into the car, or unusually stiff getting up from rest has likely done more than its current condition supports, regardless of what a breed chart says it should be able to handle. This is particularly relevant for weekend-warrior patterns, where a dog gets short, low-intensity walks all week and then a long, demanding hike on a Saturday. The mismatch between weekday conditioning and weekend demand is a common driver of soft tissue strain, not because the total weekly activity is excessive, but because it arrives in a spike the body has not been prepared for.

Why Osteopaths Think About Load, Not Just Time

When an osteopath assesses a dog with a recurring niggle, one of the first questions is rarely “how many minutes does he walk,” and much more often “what does he actually do during that time.” A dog that walks for forty-five minutes but spends much of it repeatedly launching sideways for a ball is absorbing a very different kind of load than one that covers the same distance at a steady pace. This is really the core of what an osteopathic view brings to the exercise question. Total volume matters less than whether the same movement pattern is repeated so often, on the same side, at the same intensity, that the body never gets a chance to distribute the strain evenly. A dog who only ever fetches with the same throwing arm favoured, or who is walked on the same side of the same lead every day, can develop asymmetries that a stopwatch would never reveal.

Senior Dogs and the Case for Staying Moving

The instinct with an older or arthritic dog is often to reduce activity sharply, on the reasonable-seeming logic that rest protects sore joints. In practice, joints depend on movement to stay healthy. Controlled, appropriate exercise helps maintain the muscle mass that supports an arthritic joint and keeps cartilage receiving the nutrients it needs from synovial fluid, while prolonged inactivity allows that supporting muscle to waste, which in turn increases the load the joint itself has to bear (a multimodal approach to canine osteoarthritis management, 2025). The right approach for most older dogs is not less movement but different movement: shorter, more frequent outings rather than one long walk, softer underfoot surfaces, and a level of intensity that keeps the joint moving without provoking pain afterwards.

Reading the Signs Your Dog Is Telling You

Because exercise needs shift gradually with age and circumstance, it is easy to miss the point at which a routine that worked for years stops being appropriate. A Final Thought

There is no chart, breed guide, or app that can tell an owner precisely what their own dog needs on a given day, because that answer changes with age, weather, recent activity, and a dozen other variables no formula accounts for. What holds steady is the underlying principle: exercise should be judged by what a dog's body can genuinely absorb and recover from, not by a duration borrowed from a general guideline. A dog whose exercise fits that description tends not to need much convincing that it worked. It shows in how they move the next day.
