Gatehouse Awarded Level 6 Diploma in Animal Osteopathy

A new pathway for advanced study in canine and equine osteopathy

When a vet is deciding whether to refer a patient, or an owner is choosing who to trust with a horse's back or a dog's hips, the question of qualifications comes up sooner rather than later. Who trained you, to what standard, and who checked?

For LCAO graduates, that question now has a much stronger answer. The Gatehouse Awarded Level 6 Diploma in Animal Osteopathy (DAO) is now open to eligible students as the next stage of the LCAO pathway. Developed and awarded by Gatehouse Awards, an awarding organisation regulated by Ofqual, it is the first Ofqual-recognised Level 6 RQF Diploma in animal osteopathy to cover both equine and canine streams.

This is a significant moment for the college, and we think for the profession too. Externally regulated qualifications at this level have been hard to come by in animal osteopathy. If you completed your International Diploma with us, this is the step that turns the work you have already done into a qualification that vets, clients and institutions recognise straight away.

What an Ofqual-Regulated Qualification Means in Practice

Qualifications regulated by Ofqual are placed on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which ranks them by level of difficulty. Level 6 sits at the same level as a bachelor's degree with honours, placing the learning, the assessment and the expected depth of understanding at a comparable standard.

Just as important is who stands behind it. The qualification is awarded by Gatehouse Awards rather than by LCAO itself, and it carries its own Ofqual qualification number (610/5388/0). You can find it listed among Gatehouse's animal therapy qualifications. The award means the same thing to everyone who reads it, whether that is a veterinary practice, an insurer, a professional association or a university admissions team.

If you have spent time explaining the benefits of animal osteopathy to sceptical clients or colleagues, you will know how much weight that kind of independent recognition carries.

Inside the Gatehouse Awarded Level 6 Diploma Curriculum

The curriculum was developed by an international team of osteopaths and veterinarians, and it takes students well beyond foundation knowledge. Advanced anatomy and biomechanics sit alongside osteopathic philosophy and clinical practice, with dedicated equine and canine treatment content running through the programme.

Classical structural osteopathy is a core part of the training. Its inclusion grounds the advanced clinical work in the structural approach on which osteopathy was founded.

Blended Learning Built Around Hands-On Skills

Animal osteopathy is learned with the hands as much as the head. Palpation, assessment, clinical reasoning and the application of technique all need supervised practice before they become reliable, which is why the Diploma follows a blended model that pairs online academic study with supervised practical training.

The two hands-on masterclasses required for entry mean every student arrives with supervised practical experience across both species. LCAO's student community is international, and this structure lets most of the academic work be done from home, making study at this level realistic for people already balancing a practice, a job or a family.

Equine and Canine Osteopathy in One Qualification

Many practitioners find that their caseload doesn't stay neatly within one species. A horse owner asks about the dog; a canine client keeps a pony. Because the Diploma covers both equine and canine osteopathy, graduates come away with advanced training across the two areas where most animal osteopaths actually work.

Who Can Apply for the Gatehouse Awarded Level 6 Diploma

The Gatehouse Awarded Level 6 Diploma is currently the next stage of an established educational pathway rather than a standalone entry-level course. It is open to graduates of the International Diploma in Animal Osteopathy who have gone on to complete two hands-on practical masterclasses covering canine and equine work.

The sequence is deliberate. The International Diploma provides the grounding in osteopathic principles and treatment for horses and dogs. The masterclasses add supervised practical experience, and the Diploma builds advanced study on top of both.

Turning Your Clinical Experience Into a Gatehouse Awarded Level 6 Qualification

Because this route is built for graduates who are already practising, much of the evidence comes from work you are doing anyway. Applicants put together a portfolio drawn from their own caseload, including six recent case studies (three equine and three canine), a reflective record, a business plan and evidence of professional development. This sits alongside a written theory assessment and a live professional discussion.

You will need to have worked with both canine and equine patients and be able to demonstrate safe clinical practice within the last five years. For many graduates, the cases they already see week to week are the raw material for their application.

Where the Gatehouse Awarded Level 6 Diploma Can Take Your Career

The qualification opens several doors for your animal osteopathy career, depending on the professional and regulatory environment where you practise. Some graduates will work within veterinary practices, while others will build or grow independent, self-employed animal osteopathy businesses. In the UK, treatment of animals by non-veterinarians sits within the framework of the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966, which is why working closely with vets is built into the way LCAO trains its students. A regulated qualification makes those professional relationships easier to establish.

The Diploma may also support applications for further university-level study, subject to the requirements of the institution and programme concerned.

Skilled, hands-on clinical work is one of the reasons animal osteopathy holds up well as a long-term career. A Gatehouse Awarded Level 6 qualification strengthens that position by making your expertise visible to people outside the profession.

Starting Your Pathway to the Gatehouse Awarded Level 6

If you are an LCAO graduate, the first step is a conversation. Every applicant begins with an initial professional discussion with the college before starting their portfolio. It is a chance to talk through your caseload, see where you stand against the requirements and plan your masterclasses if you still need them. The Gatehouse Awarded Level 6 Diploma programme page has the full details, the programme handbook to download and the link to get in touch.

If you are not yet an LCAO student, the pathway begins with the International Diploma in Animal Osteopathy. It is studied online at your own pace and covers both canine and equine osteopathy, leading directly into the masterclasses and on to the Gatehouse Awarded Level 6 Diploma.

A Final Thought

Every profession reaches points where its standards become visible to the outside world. A Gatehouse Awarded Level 6 qualification, regulated by Ofqual and awarded independently of the college, is one of those points for animal osteopathy. For LCAO graduates, it is a chance to have years of study and hands-on work recognised at a level that is understood well beyond the profession. If you have been wondering what comes after your International Diploma, now you know.
